2020 Yamaha YZF-R3 Specifications

By | June 30, 2020

Ever since the Yamaha R3 hit US shores back in 2015 these motorcycles have become increasingly popular with beginners, commuters, and lightweight trackday riders alike. As the entry-level machine into the world of Yamaha’s R-series sportbikes, the R3 fills the role of stepping-stone sportbike well. Even though the 2020 Yamaha R3 goes into the year unchanged, it still hits a price point of $4,999 for the base version, the low cost of entry making it attractive to many young riders.

As always, form follows function with an overall design that is largely driven by racing considerations. The R3 gets the BNL treatment, and it’s all about performance as the R3 takes on aspects of the track-proven YZR-M1. A sleeker fairing leads the way with its customary intake cutout separating the new LED headlights below a newly-shaped bubble screen that forms a low-turbulence wind pocket, but you have to tuck in tightly — race-style — to benefit from it. The low-drag bodywork is designed to garner a claimed seven-percent better penetration and an extra five mph at the top-end. That’s right folks, it’s as lean as a snake with nothing of fat in evidence to slow it down.

The YZF-R3’s motor is one of the standout features of this machine. The parallel twin, 321cc unit churns out 30.9kW (41.4hp) and puts 29.6Nm of torque to the ground. With the R3 weighing in at only 167kg wet, this makes for a fun and surprisingly quick learner machine. Revving all the way up to 13 grand and with gearing on the taller side, the mid range and top-end power of the YZF-R3 is astonishing and overall is really at the top of it’s game in the small displacement sportsbike category.
